‘One Minute With Dec’ is switching to Video.

Wow … what a time I have been having lately ….

We are well on the way to changing the format for ‘One Minute With Dec’ … going over to video with the title “4 Minutes on the Web with Dec” …

As the newsletter format has been going now since 1996 it was felt that it was time for change … so You Tube here we come.

In preparing we ran up against some interesting snags and I feel that a lot of music guys can benefit from our experience in tackling these. For instance, what camera to use? After loads of research we stumbled on a phenomenal piece of kit … just released by Kodak. They have taken the flip camera idea, where you can shoot with a phone sized camera and upload directly to your computer for editing. Problem with the flip camera is that you cannot use an external microphone, thus the voice quality, although good, will not be good at long distance and will also pick up wind buffeting noises.

So, the Kodak camera is Zi8 … Google it … approx. £69 [good eh?] and it will record HD. Will connect to your HD TV as well and is altogether fit for purpose. You will need a mini memory storage card [lots of memory for approx. £16].

Get a decent Pro camera tripod while you are at it so your shots are rock steady. More next week.

Guitars fascinate me [the latest Les Paul]

The Les Paul Custom made its debut in 1954 after the initial success of the Les Paul Goldtop.

Les Paul said he suggested black as the colour for the guitar because it looked "classy" and went well with a tuxedo on stage. From that point on, the Les Paul Custom has often been referred to as the "tuxedo" Les Paul. And with its gold appointments, fully bound body, neck and headstock and mother-of-pearl inlays, we think you'll agree that the Epiphone Les Paul Custom is "dressed to kill"...

Looks almost identical to my own Gibson Custom Les Paul circa 1960

So you want to lose weight? [always the New Year resolution]

I have been reading a lot about proper weight loss and muscle addition and retention. So one item I certainly do not eat is potato … am I right?

White potatoes are actually a healthy carbohydrate as long as you eat them in the right form... with the entire skin, and please don't ruin them by deep frying them into French fries either! French fries are one of the most evil things ever invented for your health, but only because we ruin them by soaking them in a scorching bath of trans fats in the deep fryer from the hydrogenated oils that are typically used.

Keep in mind that potatoes contain so many vitamins and minerals that the list is way too long to even try. Also, as long as you eat the skins, you get a decent shot of fibre too.

On the topic of potatoes not being so bad after all, I don't remember where I saw this referenced, but I recently saw a particular study that had participants eat something like 7-9 whole potatoes per day for several weeks. At the conclusion of the study, the potato eaters had actually consistently lost wei.ght! I'd venture a guess that the reason the people lost weight is that they were probably so full from eating all of those damn potatoes, that they actually consumed less calories than normal! An average sized potato only has about 100-120 calories, and I can surely imagine you'd be full constantly from eating 7-9 potatoes each day.

Now I would never recommend going to those extremes, but my point is that an occasional potato is not going to hurt your efforts to get lean, especially if you combine it with some other fibrous vegetables and maybe a healthy fat and some protein.

“Okay, Dec.

I don't have to remind you that I am financially challenged. I would appreciate anything that would help me on the way to produce 'that certain hit'. Remember though, cent for cent, dollar for dollar, it all goes toward surviving at this point. Yes, I do wish someone would just give me a chance without reaching for something I don't have. Of course if I did have it, I wouldn't mind investing it. It is just really hard to draw blood out of a turnip.

Here is my address in case you believe that you could help.

S****

Believe me, every Email I get from music people says the same thing: "I'm broke". I never get one saying they have too much money [grin!]

Consider this:

I was broke too! Very broke. But I starved, froze through the winter, and never lost faith. I did exactly what I was advised, I learned everything I could about Show Business, collected wooden fruit crates outside clubs to bring back, break up and burn to keep warm. Slept three in a bed to survive the cold nights. [sadly not mixed!]

But I always understood that the music industry is the same as any other.... accountants PAY to get educated, lawyers PAY to get educated, surgeons PAY to get educated, athletes PAY to get educated, Formula 1 drivers. A University degree does not come cheap .... but lots of guys get degrees with no initial money. I read Civil engineering at Dublin.

In the music industry, would-be successes expect a hand out every time. No one in any other industry does ....strange? Could that be why the percentage who gain music success is so tiny?

This is not meant to put you down or insult or denigrate, S****. It is just to show that those who do have success in our Industry understand that it is a knowledge based, skill based profession that has to be learned and learned hard. There is no easy way and as they say: "there are no free lunches". If you want success strong enough you will find a way to finance that success.

We all did it, You need knowledge and methodology to have Number Ones .... I did it! So can you.

In this business, no one will give you a chance ... YOU have to make the chances yourself by your own knowledge, skill and talent plus the all important LEARNING.

The Number one priority is the "learn how to learn".

Regards

The gags: ..... [all-girl biker bar]

An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake.

Finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniel's. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?'

The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, 'Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given you're blind, you should know five things:

1 The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.

2 The bouncer is a blonde girl.

3 I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate.

4 The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter.

5 The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?'

The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and says, 'No thanks...not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times.'
